Feed the Birds
This one is quick and easy. I saw this on pinterest and thought my guys would love it. The original location with a ton of great ideas is here. Since my guys are a little bigger, I added a few additional elements. My boys love worms so having the “birds” eat the worms was intriguing. This is how it looked on our shelves. I find a timer immediately draws my bigger little guy in. You could also play with two people and one person be a “bird” and one person trying to save the worms.
For my bigger little guy, I made two colors of “worms” and added a timer. He had to see how many he could get in a minute. The brown ones were worth 2 points (working on skip counting) and the orange ones were worth one point. He quickly began to be able to get them all in under a minute. Then he could beat his best time. He loves games where he can beat his one score. I love the reinforcement of striving for your personal best.
For my younger guy, I extended the time limit to see how many he could grab in two minutes. We are still working on one to one correspondence so we kept all of the worms as 1 point/1 worm. They have really enjoyed this work. This was one of the best times that my little guy got. He collected all of the worms in about 45 seconds (he had two birds going).
The kids got some practice in with fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, counting, skip counting, and time recognition (stop watch). I got a few minutes to cook dinner in peace!

i am so proud of the boys for "making good time!" 😉
I really like this idea, and I'm definitely going to try and see if my daughter can do it! Great for fine motor.
I know you are proud Ms.Amy. I will let them know 😉
Thanks Marissa,
Let me know how it goes.
Hi Kim, just checking in to say thanks for visiting and for the Pin!
What a fun idea! I love that it combines both math and eye-hand coordination skills! Thanks so much for linking up with Montessori Monday. I featured your post at the Living Montessori Now Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/LivingMontessoriNow
