Using Science Task Cards
I’ve written before about using task cards. They are such a flexible resource and if you want to dig into all the ways to use science task cards in middle or high school – check out this post. This time I want to delve into combining science task cards with games for more engagement and learning.
You know, in the ever-changing world of high school education, we’re always on the lookout for fresh ways to keep our students engaged and reinforce those lessons. So, here’s the deal: one my new favorites is combining task cards and game boards. In this blog post, we’re going to take a deep dive into we can really rock these task cards by weaving them into some seriously fun game board activities.
Why Pair Science Task Cards with Game Boards?
Task cards are versatile, compact, and perfect for making learning hands-on and participatory. When combined with a game board, they bring several benefits to the table:
- Active Learning: Pairing science task cards with game boards turns learning into an active, engaging experience that gets students invested in the material.
- Tailored Learning: Task cards can be customized to suit various learning levels, allowing you to cater to the diverse needs of your students.
- Assessment and Review: You can use task card games as assessments to gauge student understanding and provide valuable feedback.
- Teamwork and Collaboration: Many game board activities encourage group play, fostering teamwork and social interaction among students.
- Fun and Motivation: Games naturally add an element of fun and competition to learning, motivating students to actively participate.

Getting Started with Task Card Game Boards
Step 1: Choose Your Game Board
Start by picking a game board that aligns with your curriculum and objectives. My current favorites to make it super easy are Candy Land and Chutes &Ladders. You can really pick any board. Classic boards like Monopoly, Scrabble, or Chess work well, or you can craft a custom board for a specific lesson or unit.
Step 2: Create or Get Task Cards
Design task cards that match your learning goals. You can craft your own using index cards or find pre-made task card sets (I have quite a few in my shop). Ensure that the task cards are clear and straightforward, containing questions, prompts, or challenges tied to your subject matter.
Step 3: Set Game Rules
Determine the rules for your game board activity. Will students advance based on correct answers to task cards, or will they need to complete additional tasks or challenges to progress? Make sure the rules are fair, easy to understand, and engaging.
Step 4: Prepare for the Game
Get everything ready, including the game board, task cards, and any extra materials like dice, counters, or game pieces. Arrange the cards in a deck or stack and strategically place them around the game board.
Step 5: Explain and Play
Explain the rules and objectives to your students. Divide them into teams or let them play individually, depending on the game’s design. Encourage friendly competition and set a time limit for completing tasks or moving through the board.
Step 6: Reflect and Discuss
After the game, initiate a discussion or reflection session. Ask students to share their experiences, what they learned, and how they can apply this knowledge in real-life scenarios.
Example Game Ideas
- Math Challenge Board: Turn a traditional board like Snakes and Ladders into a math challenge. Students must solve math problems on task cards to advance.
- Reading Quiz Quest: Customize a game board based on an informational text. Task cards can contain questions about characters, themes, or literary devices.
- Steps in a Process Expedition: Craft a timeline on the game board and use task cards featuring key events or figures from a specific era. Students must correctly identify and place them on the timeline.
- Science Topic Exploration: Develop a custom science-themed board and task cards covering various scientific concepts. Students progress by correctly answering questions or conducting experiments related to each topic.
Science Task Cards are a flexible and engaging resource.
Task cards and game boards offer an engaging and effective way to reinforce learning in your high school classroom. This interactive approach promotes active participation, teamwork, and critical thinking. By blending these two educational tools, you can create memorable and effective lessons that empower your students to take charge of their learning journey. So, don’t hesitate to introduce task card game boards into your teaching arsenal, and watch your students thrive in the world of education!
