Number Sense… again.

I am not getting as much on the shelves and one of the things I realized is that I don’t have to reinvent the wheel every 1-2 weeks and I need to do more recycling of old ideas that were a hit.  So in that vein, we are reviewing number sense on our shelves and beginning to work with it more for my youngest little guy.  We are actually dialing back on the Wii (although I do love some Just Dance for getting the bad behavior buggies out) and getting back to “our” life.

This is a really fun set of work that we did in the fall.  To make it a little more engaging this time around,  I moved us from the table to the floor and used the oversized dice! It was a hit.

Here is the original number sense post:

So I printed off these great cards from  Ms. Preppy.  They are awesome.  I had already substituted them in the four in a row game.  My original plan was to use them for a modified Go Fish game.  Unfortunately, my son was all Go Fish gamed out so I had to improvise.

I took dice and laid out 1-10.  I took the remaining cards and dealt out 5 per player with  a draw pile on the side.  Now the bigger little guy rolled the dice.  The number he rolled was where we started.  You could discard any of your cards that matched the number by placing them beside the number.

If you didn’t have a card you had to draw one from the pile.  You could play it immediately if it matched.  This continued until closer to the end when we had many of the numbers full and then we had to roll multiple times.

I knew I had a winner on my hands when the kids asked to play again.  This game focused on number sense, addition, and number words.  Use your materials… don’t be afraid to adapt your plans or the materials to meet your needs.  This was a lot of fun!

I am sharing this at Math Mondays.
