Homeschool 7th Grade

Want a glimpse of what it looks like to homeschool 7th grade?

I thought I would share our somewhat flexible plans, thanks COVID, and give you some links to a few other people’s plans for homeschooling 7th grade.

I will go ahead and put it out there, I don’t look back on Jr.High (that just aged me, didn’t it?) as the best years of my life.  Not even the best school years.  OK – they were the worst.  All the hormones and drama, I was thrilled to get to high school.    Anyone with me?  Now looking back and parenting a 12 year old (this is my third time around) and I can tell you it really wasn’t Jr. High’s fault – at all.  Bless their hearts.

We are an eclectic mix.  If I had to call us something specific, I would say we are traditional with a twist.   We cover the traditional courses, we use lots of formats, and try to sprinkle fun in between the eye rolls of the teens.  Did I mention bless their hearts?

Let’s get to it.

7th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

  • Two academic classes – language arts and world history.  In theory, these will be in person but at this point I think we can just assume we don’t know and move on.  If they aren’t in person they will be virtual via teleconferencing.  Fine. Check.
  • Online math.  He will continue with Teaching Textbooks this fall.
  • Science with me.  He will be doing life science with me.  He will follow along with the Biology class I’m teaching, but his expectations are lower and he will have some fun stuff added in.
  • A cooking class and study skills class (if they happen).
  • We are also working with both boys on life skills like changing a tire and fixing a toilet.

Are you short term homeschooling this year? You aren’t alone.  Lots of people are choosing to homeschool this fall with the plan to return to public school when it is safe.   My suggestions for short term homeschoolers below.

Let’s check out some other homeschool styles.

Charlotte Mason/Literature Focused for 7th Grade.

This mom actually combines literature focused instruction (Charlotte Mason approach) and classical education.  She has an interesting mix of 7th grade homeschool choices.

Classical Education in the Middle School Years.

Sara Dennis shares a comprehensive guide to starting a classical education in the middle school years.  If you are interested in classical education, she has a great site.

Mystie from Simply Convivial is giving you not a only a breakdown of her classical education choices for 7th and 8th grade, but she also gives you a day in the life.

Traditional Homeschooling 7th Grade Homeschool.

At Home Made Our Way she is covering all the traditional subjects in her own way (just like her name implies).  She has lots of great ideas for a very enriching year for your 7th grader and includes a schedule.

Online and Virtual Learning Options.

There are so many great media rich resources out there that it is hard to even pick just a few.   We have used Power Homeschool in the past and it was great when we were settling in after our move and hadn’t found classes yet.

There are also virtual programs like WiloStar3D and classes like Mr.D Math (starts with pre-algebra) and Outschool.

Suggestions for Short Term Homeschoolers.

If you are just starting out, save yourself a lot of money and time by really figuring out which styles and curriculum will work for your family and which won’t.  I’ve tried them all over the course of the years and I’ve discovered that the most important factor in deciding which to choose isn’t your kids.

That will help you buy the right curriculum the first time.  Check out Suddenly Seeking Homeschooling for more details.
