Cup Full of Ten
Students need to memorize the combinations that make ten. I was inspired to make this game after seeing this post. This game gives kids a little more practice. It requires a cup, 10 beans, a sharpie, two sheets of paper and something to write on. I also added an old plate as a place to empty the beans. I took 2 scrap pieces of paper. On each piece of paper I divided it in half horizontally and wrote a number line of 0-10 on the bottom. I left the top part blank. The picture was my first board (which was mine) and I forgot zero and added it to the end. For my son, zero was first.
I took 10 beans and colored one side with a sharpie. The players took turns pouring out the cup of beans. The player counted the beans which were colored. Then he/she had to find that number on the number line. To get credit, he had to either count or calculate how many non-colored beans were left. This reinforces the combinations that make ten. You will get some combinations over and over, and the student will begin to immediately say “5 and 5 again!”
You could play until the card is full or make each player mark a spot every roll (think Yahtzee). We just kept playing until we ran out of time. The one with the most spaces filled won the game.
This was quick and simple, but we had a lot of fun!
