Have you considered using learning stations or even an escape room with your students? This is a plasma membrane activity that is ideal for reviewing before an exam. Includes sorting cards on active vs. passive transport, questions about membrane structure, membrane labeling, and overview of osmosis and tonicity. Editable task cards are included to substitute any of the activities included.

In this scenario, students are put into groups and given the following information.

You and your team have just arrived at an international conference, but your laptop did not get there with you. Luckily, you saved a copy in the lab’s cloud. Unluckily, you can’t remember the lab password. The research has been top secret so you have extra layers of protection. To reset the password you need to decode the message as your prompt. Get started. Your presentation starts in about an hour.

This is a 4 part escape room that can be adapted for your students into anything from seat work to a full blown escape room experience. Depending on your time and your classes.

4 tasks:

  1. Students are asked to sort clues into one of two categories: active or passive transport.
  2. Students are given a list of social media posts and asked to fill in the blank. The posts are the about the plasma membrane
  3. Students are provided an informational text on cell membranes and osmosis and asked to answer questions using the provided text. Two texts are provided, but you may use one or both.
  4. Students use the answers in the previous tasks to break the code and solve the encrypted message.
