Have you ever tried to teach an opinionated toddler or preschooler anything? It feels like nailing jello to a tree with a lot of sass mixed in. I was struggling to get my youngest to sit down and work on, well anything, until we started using an app and I was pleasantly surprised when I could use it for my older kids as well.
I was compensated for my time reviewing this product/service and writing this review. You can read my full disclosure here.
Reading Eggs has been around for a while and I’ve actually used it with both of my older boys (when they were younger). It was a great supplement, but I’m in love with the addition of the lower level to really work on those foundational skills even before the ABC/s and 123s.
These are reading games taken to the next level. It is engaging and fun. My little one was ecstatic every time she earned an egg.
My little ball of sass has loved working through the activities in Reading Eggs Junior. Working on skills like shape matching, sound matching, memory, letter puzzles, sorting, and more. All important pre-reading skills and just on point to help her feel accomplished rather than frustrated. Miss Sassy has loved the reinforcement of kids laughing and collecting stickers from the eggs at the end of each successful activity.
Reading games that go beyond letter recognition and sight words
My preschooler worked in the Reading Eggs Junior program quite a bit. I never once asked if she wanted to play that she didn’t say yes and my future leader, usually has no problem giving you a strong no on things she isn’t interested in doing. I often met resistance when it was time to put the electronics away and move to something else.
The app requires internet access but as long as you have that it’s a great way to take occupy those times where you might need them entertained (like when you are preparing meals.
Instead of resorting to putting their favorite show on the TV turn that into a productive time of learning and developing. These are definitely reading games that can be done independently. In fact, she often sat beside me and did her big girl work while I was getting some work of my own done on the computer.
There are three levels of Reading Eggs Junior. This gives you an idea (according to their own site):
Reggie & Friends
Focusing on the everyday life of a child and their experiences, activities develop fine motor skills, visual matching, letter formation and counting skills.
- Jigsaw Puzzles
- Matching Game.
Focusing on sounds, music and following directions, activities develop listening skills, memory, and letter sounds.
- Junior Sounds
- Sound Buttons.
With a focus on animals, the alphabet and visual discrimination, activities develop sorting skills, letter recognition and alphabet knowledge.
- Jack in the Box
- Letter Puzzles
- Same or Different
- The Alphabet.
Online learning isn’t just for reading.
We have also played around with Mathseeds which is a newer addition to the Reading Eggs program. Mango the monkey helps introduce your little one to numbers. The Mathseeds program really targets math skills for grades K-3. My kids all fall outside those areas so we didn’t do as much with the Math Seeds program (except for checking out that cute monkey).
Reading games don’t have to stop with the alphabet
Reading eggs isn’t just for younger kids. One of my kids reads quickly but can struggle with comprehension. Reading Eggspress is a great way to get extra practice on comprehension strategies.
Reading Eggspress is designed to help kids gain confidence and skills in the deeper levels of reading. My son loves his avatar and his “apartment” in Reading Eggspress.
This year we are looking at a daunting move and so we have switched to online learning (for at least the beginning of the school year) and my son was excited to try this out instead of the program we had been using which he said was boring. The animation and visuals with the connection of their own avatar are a win with the upper elementary and tween kids.
The four elements this program focuses on are:
1. Step-by-step comprehension strategies
2. Reading widely, reading often
3. Effective comprehension strategies
Online learning can be affordable
The program is also affordable. Right now my readers can get a 4-week trial for free. The 4-week free trial gives access to all of the programs- Reading Eggs Junior, Reading Eggs, Reading Eggspsress and Mathseeds.
