I have been in research science and science education for my entire adult life, but I hated science until I was a senior in high school. Not only that, I thought I was not smart enough to be scientifically minded or to go into the sciences. I can distinctly remember my dad asking my mom, “why did they assign this project to a girl?”.
Why am I telling you this? Because I want to see things change and I need your help to do it. I am on a mission to stop teaching kids to hate science by creating better science experiences.
The Saga Continues
Even though I didn’t enjoy the sciences as a young student, I fell into the trap of teaching like I was taught. How many kids did I teach to hate science the way I was taught to hate it? That was a sobering question. I am wondering if you are asking yourself the same thing?
Making a Change
What is my point? I want us to change the way science is presented and as a result teach kids to love science instead. Science and history are disciplines that use the skills of math and reading. Math and reading skills are essential for success but they are skills to be used in other disciplines. Our laser focus on math and reading to the exclusion of all other disciplines isn’t working. We are not teaching kids to be successful in the real world because we’re teaching them to be successful in school.
As a parent, I want more for my kids than good grades. As a teacher, I never want to ask myself if I’ve taught kids to hate science and have the answer be yes ever again. These two realizations have changed how I teach and interact with my kids, other students, and the sciences. I have been motivated to make better science experiences. I want you to know how to make those changes, too.
The Challenge

I have created a free 7 day course to
Stop Teaching Kids to Hate Science. We’ll be talking about creating fun and effective lessons so that kids get excited instead of overwhelmed (or underwhelmed) when it comes to science.
