Halloween Middle School Activities

Halloween Middle School Activities

Middle school can be a tough age to live through and to teach.  Many of the kids are torn between the extra fun that getting older brings like going to movies by themselves and starting to give up some of their favorite activities from when they are younger.  These are FIVE Halloween Middle School Activities that will make you a hero.

I have 31 activities for older kids that are highlighted for you to use,  those are mostly resources.  These are some specific things that might make you the coolest person in a middle schooler’s life.

A Costume Contest

Consider hosting an academic costume contest for Halloween.  This could be a mock conference, a salon-style get together complete with tea, or anything where co-splay can be part.  Make it part of your curriculum.

Costume ideas:

  • pick a famous scientist
  • animal
  • philosopher
  • historical figure
  • book character
  • author

Make sure that you have strict guidelines for what can and cannot be worn.  You also need to comply with the dress code so make sure that it can be something that can be put on and taken off within your class period.  Consider a poll for parents or students to vote on the top costume.  Challenge kids to link a costume to your curriculum.   I would allow more than one day if possible.    Don’t forget your own costume.

Do Something Different

Halloween is a great time for you to do something different.  Consider an immersive experience like a murder mystery or an escape style game to match the mood of the holiday.   Crime scene tape is easy to find this time of year.

This is great time to get parents involved by asking them to step in as detectives, victims, or even witnesses to the crime.

If you can’t go that elaborate – I completely understand.  Grab a ready to go activity and a bag of candy and the kids will be stoked to be doing something different.

Play a Game

Using a word wall in your room?  Getting ready for a big test?  Now is a great time for games.

You can grab traditional games like Jenga, Candy Land, Guess Who, and even Monopoly for classroom use.   A set of either vocabulary cards, task cards,  or flashcards is often all you need. Adapting a game is easier than you might think.

Don’t have the time for making something on your own?  Grab a gameshow style game from TPT or aKahoot and get the learning party started.  Make sure to throw in a few things to create a spooky mood.

Eat a Spooky Treat

See if students can bring in treats.   Food is a central part of any culture so the lessons are endless.  Make sure to follow your school’s guidelines about treats.  Even fruit can be fun.

  • Talk about the history of Halloween.
  • Nutrition facts in candy and other treats.
  • The impact of sugar on teeth.
  • The history of sugar.
  • The world impact of palm oil.
  • The social impact of the teal pumpkin.

The academic links can go on forever.   Create parameters beforehand so that you make sure that you have a lesson for your treats.

Have FUN!

Teaching is hard work and being with kids all day can be more than a little exhausting.  I suggest that you let your hair down a little and focus on a day of connection with learning being the side bonus.   You might wind up being an educational superhero!
