Fun and Low-Prep Ideas to Teach Characteristics of Life
Teaching the characteristics of life to high school and middle school students doesn’t have to be a daunting task. In fact, it can be a fun and engaging experience for both teachers and learners alike. I have some things I do every year that really get my students excited about learning with me.
Living/Nonliving Scavenger Hunt:
Take the classroom outdoors and organize a nature walk scavenger hunt. Divide students into small groups and provide them with a checklist the characteristics of life. Have them come back with ten things that are living and 5 things that are nonliving. If tech is allowed, have them take pictures. Encourage them to observe, identify, and record organisms displaying features such as movement, growth, reproduction, or response to stimuli. After the hunt, gather the groups together to discuss their findings and share interesting observations. Have the class talk through whether they agree or disagree on a groups findings and why.
“Guess the Characteristic of Life” Game:
Transform learning into a game by playing “Guess the Characteristic of Life.” Prepare flashcards, each featuring a different characteristic of life, but not by name. Provide student response boards (small dry erase boards) or use buzzers for students to identify which characteristic of living things you are describing. You could also do this in a Taboo style game. This interactive activity reinforces understanding while encouraging effective communication skills.
Characteristics of Life Chart:
Create a large chart displaying the characteristics of living things. Provide students with sticky notes or small cards with examples of each characteristic. Let them work in groups to place the examples on the chart correctly. This visual and collaborative exercise fosters teamwork and critical thinking, helping students solidify their understanding of the characteristics.
Living Organism Role-Play:
Bring the characteristics of life to life through role-play! Assign each student or group a specific organism and its corresponding characteristic of life. Allow them to embody the organism and demonstrate how it exhibits that particular feature. Whether it’s a plant demonstrating growth or an animal showcasing movement, this interactive approach will make learning fun and memorable.
Claim-Evidence-Reasoning:
I teach this concept early so I like to overlap teaching claim-evidence-reasoning as an evaluation technique. Engage students’ problem-solving skills with a scenario. I actually use a zombie themed scene to teach these concepts and then have them do a virus themed assignment later. You can grab my resources in my shop >>>click on the image<<<
