Prepare for College Biology. The information you need to succeed.
Update: The course has been renamed Biology REFRESH, but has all the same great content.
This is the first of my plans to prepare for college biology and other courses. This plan provides a schedule and weekly posts on those topics. It is designed to help a student prepare for college biology courses and to help them be ready to hit the ground running when they get into their entry-level biology course this fall. This plan is a general plan and would be helpful for students that will be taking General Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, or an Essentials in Biology course. It will help address one of the reasons students stumble in college science courses – background knowledge. This plan is not a substitute for coursework or guarantee of success, but should be used as a review of materials that were presented in previous coursework.
I feel like there are a few areas where students seem to have the most trouble early on. These are the areas that I am going to focus on in these plans. For a general list of things you might want to address before going into science college courses check out my post here. I also have a post on general study skills. I will be posting about each topic once a week with a plan for you to follow to review. Ideally all of the material covered is review and designed as a refresher before starting your new coursework. The areas of focus in the prepare for college biology plan are :
BONUS: tips and tricks to help with labs
Getting Started: Preparation Week
You will need to get a book to use as a reference. You may want to go ahead and get the book you will be using in your course. Typically if you go to the college website there will be a link to the bookstore and you can find out which book you need there. The textbook may seem overwhelming so you may want to get a prep book. You can do a search at an online book retailer and find lots of good ideas. I will also be providing links to some content online that you can use to help you prepare.
You will also need a notebook, highlighters, pens/pencils, and probably notecards or sticky notes to help with studying. Looking forward to helping you start to prepare for college level biology.
